He derived his surname from Yerushalmi, meaning “man of Jerusalem. But, I enjoyed this book and felt it described the shock and horror of discovering the death camps, the apparent initial “naivety ” of the west in leoh with the Soviets, and the unique challenges of Berlin very well.
A God in Ruins. I realize all of this history is pertinent to the story but I do think it was presented in endless minute detail, far more than need be. I wonder what Uris would write about that now.

Leon Uris is the best at the historical novel genre. I personally think this is his best novel. Refresh and try again.

When I finally got to read bits of the actual plot, while interesting, I found the main character sanctimonious and far too perfect for all he believes himself flawed. The poor people in Germany who really were not lein favor of Hitler in the first place, were caught in the cross fire and suffered in measureably.
It is ultimately about hope and rebirth but be prepared to have your heart torn out a time or two.
